As probably with any art, music or other craft. First, geniuses try to perfect the craft. But as time goes, fight for every % of improvement becomes a hard work and those geniuses come back to basics and favor simplicity over struggle to achieve perfection. Even though I am no genius, I had the similar enlightenment when my wife asked me very insistently “can’t you just make a damn good coffee now”?
Why bottomless portafilter?
Bottomless portafilter, otherwise called “naked” is a portafilter without the spout and the bottom with exposed basket. It allows direct espresso extraction from a basket to a cup.
The main reasons to use exposed basket are: a) a perfect feedback to monitor and improve grind, water shower and tamp; b) improved espresso crema and, c) beautiful look of coffee extraction.
Here’s my conclusion: IMS Competition shower screens were the best ones I could find. Nevertheless, after several months of use, competition showers start to show the negative side of its technology. Active cleaning and overdosed basket deform and scratch the surface of Competition showers. Even though, they perform impressively, the showers are very delicate, not forgiving and not suited for heavy use.
Being a highly innovative company, IMS Filtri used 200 µM filter competition shower, reinforced it with a photo etched membrane and applied quartz coating. Eventually, IMS Filtri contributed Nanoquartz reinforced shower screens and filter baskets to E&B LAB.
