Q: Why doesn’t the IMS basket fit into my original Dedica portafilter?

The original Dedica portafilter includes a plastic internal insert designed for pressurized baskets. This insert prevents precision baskets from seating correctly and must be removed before installing certain IMS baskets. How to remove the plastic insert from the Dedica portafilter: Remove the basket (use a small spoon handle or flat tool to lift it out). Look inside the portafilter: you will usually see a black plastic insert and/or a plastic ring beneath where the basket sits. Pry out the insert carefully: Use a small flat screwdriver or pick . Start at the edge of the plastic part and lift it up gradually. Work around the circle rather than forcing one spot. Remove any separate plastic ring if present (some versions have more than one plastic piece). Clean the portafilter and ensure only the metal body remains where the basket seats. Install the IMS basket directly into the portafilter until it snaps in and sits flush. If you cannot see a removable plastic piece: Some Dedica portafilters differ by version/market. If the plastic part appears fixed or you’re unsure, stop and contact us with a photo of the inside of your portafilter - we’ll confirm what needs to be removed before you force anything. Important: Remove plastic parts only. Do not bend or remove any metal lip or retaining spring that holds the basket in place.

This filter basket crafted in Italy by IMS for DeLonghi, Smeg espresso machines with 51 mm portafilters. Cylindrical shape with a narrowing at the base creates a compact coffee pod which allows the coffee to get a better extraction and space for the coffee volume. Optimized and patented hole pattern maximizes flavor, highlighting sweetness, ripe fruit, and crema. Instructions & Care

Before first use: Rinse thoroughly with warm water or run a blank shot through your machine with the basket in place to remove any manufacturing residue.

Daily cleaning: After each use, knock out the puck and rinse the basket under hot water to remove coffee oils and residue.

Monthly maintenance: Soak in a solution of espresso machine cleaner and hot water for 15–30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly before reuse.

Avoid abrasive tools: Use a soft brush or cloth to clean. Do not use steel wool or harsh scouring pads as they may damage the surface.

Storage: Keep the basket dry and store it in a clean environment when not in use.

Is this IMS basket compatible with 51 mm tampers?

IMS baskets are compatible with DeLonghi original and most custom tampers. Some tamper manufacturers make “precision” tampers with a very tight fit. Unfortunately, they do not leave any space for air and even small particles of coffee can make tamper to get stuck in the basket.
