An ultra-thin 0.5 mm IMS puck screen that helps distribute water evenly, reduce channeling and keep the shower screen cleaner.

Description

The IMS Big Bang Puck Diffuser Screen is a precision-made, single-piece stainless steel screen designed to distribute water more evenly before it reaches the coffee puck.

Its hydrodynamic Big Bang perforation pattern controls how water moves across the screen, helping soften direct impact on the coffee bed. This can reduce the risk of channeling and support more consistent extractions - particularly when paired with careful puck preparation.

At only 0.5 mm thick, the screen occupies minimal space above the coffee while helping prevent grounds and coffee residue from reaching the shower screen. Its smooth, low-retention surface is quick to rinse and less prone to coffee buildup.

The included magnetic pin allows to lift the hot screen from the basket without touching it directly.

Why do you need a puck screen?

  • Helps distribute water more evenly across the coffee bed
  • Softens direct water impact on the puck
  • Can help reduce channeling and improve consistency
  • Keeps the shower screen and grouphead cleaner
  • Ultra-thin 0.5 mm stainless steel construction
  • Smooth surface helps minimize coffee buildup
  • Includes a magnetic pin for easy removal

Dose and headspace

Although only 0.5 mm thick, the puck screen still occupies some space between the coffee puck and shower screen. If your basket is already filled close to capacity, reduce your usual dose by approximately 0.5–1 g as needed. The portafilter should lock into the grouphead normally, without the puck screen being pressed firmly against the shower screen.

Compatibility

Size 58 mm compatible with filter baskets for 58/58.4 mm tampers: E61, 58mm group heads. Fits Rocket, Dual Boiler Breville, ECM, Faema, Vibiemme, VBM, Rancilio, Gaggia, La Marzocco, Synesso, Slayer, Astoria, Nuova Simonelli, Sanremo, Vibiemme and other E61 machines.

Instructions & Care

Instructions

  1. Prepare and tamp the coffee puck as usual.
  2. Place the puck screen flat and centred on top of the tamped coffee (either side works).
  3. Lock the portafilter into the grouphead. It should lock in normally without excessive resistance.
  4. Brew your espresso.
  5. After brewing, remove the portafilter and use the magnetic pin to lift the hot puck screen from the basket.
  6. Rinse the screen after each use.

If the portafilter feels unusually tight or the puck screen shows a strong shower-screen impression, reduce the coffee dose slightly.

Important: The magnetic pin is for removing the puck screen after brewing. Do not place it inside the portafilter during extraction.

Care

  • Rinse with warm water after every use.
  • Allow the screen to dry before storing.
  • For deeper cleaning, soak it periodically in a suitable espresso-equipment cleaner, following the cleaner manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Rinse thoroughly after using any cleaning product.
  • Do not bend, pry or scrape the screen with sharp tools.
  • The low-retention surface helps reduce buildup but does not eliminate the need for regular cleaning.
  • Minor cutting marks around the edge may occur during manufacturing and do not affect performance.
